WHY USE A PROOFREADER?

Whether it be a business brochure or website to sell your goods and services; a book that is intended to provide hours of pleasure; a report for your boss or a dissertation that can make the difference to your final grade, spelling mistakes and bad grammar can seriously impact the credibility of your work to your target audience.

In 2011, a BBC report cited an online entrepreneur as saying that poor spelling is costing the UK millions of pounds in lost revenue for internet businesses. He claimed that an analysis of site figures revealed that a single spelling mistake could cut online sales in half as a result of consumer mistrust of the company. When there are underlying concerns about fraud and safety, then getting the basics right is essential.

Of course you can proofread it yourself, but unfortunately when you have spent so long composing something, you often just see what you think it should say rather than what it actually does say. That is when another pair of eyes comes in useful, particularly if those eyes have been trained for such a job.

I will search for and eliminate:

  • typographical errors

  • continuity errors

  • inconsistencies in spelling, grammar, punctuation and style

Some basic editing may be used to improve awkward sentences, repetition or clumsy word breaks.

Layout and presentation will be checked for any missing material that has been referenced.

If you are still not convinced of the need for a proofreader, take a look at this, 'Candidate for a Pullet Surprise'.
